The idea began over 30 years ago, with the opening of a small mattress shop in the Bay Area.  A few years later Berkeley Ergonomics was born through the co-operation of Colin Hunter and Mike Lavin – experienced professionals who now each have 35 years experience in the design and sales of innovative sleep systems. Together they developed the fundamental concepts of natural mattresses, free from harmful chemicals, which continues today.

Some people prefer a supportive, luxuriant feel in a mattress.  That’s why we created the Stockholm.  It still offers all the support of our other mattresses, but its dominant characteristic is a buoyancy rather than firmness.

The secret to the Stockholm’s lush feeling is a second layer of micro-coils on top of a honeycomb base coil.  These two-inch high micro-coils have very small diameters – we can pack over 1,500 of them into a single layer. Like the larger coils beneath them, the micro coils are also individually encased.  The advantage of the greater number of independent micro coils is their ability to respond to the slightest shift in movement.  Finished off with a top layer of natural latex foam cushioning, the coils adjust to the body’s contours in a way that provides a weightless, enveloping feeling of sumptuous comfort.  The luxurious feel is very different from the kind of smothering softness you might experience with a mattress cushioned with polyfoam or fiber fill.  Because the primary cushioning of the Nordic comes from the micro coils instead of filler, it maintains horizontal stability. This mattresses high-comfort factor comes from the vertical compression of the springs. Unlike fiber-fill mattresses, these springs will not sag or loose their shape over time.

A new level of conforming comfort and active support

The Oslo mattress begins with a base layer of individually encased interactive coils for exceptional, independent body support.  Made in Germany, these high carbon steel coils are center glued and nested in a honeycombed pattern.  These interactive coils feature alternating rows of higher and lower coils with different diameters and gauges.  This innovative design creates highly ergonomic support through increased surface contouring.  This reduces pressure on the body, providing more comfort and promoting correct spinal alignment for restful, rejuvenating sleep.  The interactive base coil is topped by a two inch layer of the finest pure 100% natural latex to provide all the cushioning you could want without forming the premature sags and depressions that thicker synthetic padding will.  This cushioning provides exceptional resilience and ventilation.  Each mattress is covered in the most comfortable organic stretch cotton lined with wool.  We quilt to 100% pure Merino wool to provide the comfort of thermal insulation and moisture regulation.  You will sleep better in a drier, more breathable sleeping environment.

Q: What are the mattress dimensions?

A: Both are 38″x75″ and fit in any standard Twin frame

Q: How do you meet flame retardancy regulations without using chemicals?

A: All of our mattresses are quilted with Merino wool which is naturally flame retardant. 

Q: How are they different from the adult mattresses? Can adults sleep on them?

A: The ergonomic construction is less sophisticated than our adult mattresses. These basic designs are appropriate for children and perfectly appropriate for occasional adult use though with less adult body contouring. 

Q: Is it waterproof?

A: No. We use only breathable materials to promote better temperature regulation and prevent allergens like mold, mildew and dust mites.  The plastics required to create a waterproof barrier would trap moisture.
